Basic principles of equipment operation:
Heavy ion therapy utilizes the physical characteristic of its large mass. After being transformed and enhanced by a synchrotron, the speed of the heavy ion beam reaches 70% of the speed of light. By "bombarding" tumor lesions with high-speed beams, it releases less energy before reaching the lesion. When it reaches the lesion, it instantly forms an energy release peak called the "Bragg peak", achieving "directed blasting" of the tumor. It strongly irradiates the lesion area without "collateral damage" to normal cells along the way, thus maximizing the therapeutic effect. In addition, heavy ion therapy has significant advantages in biology - it greatly reduces the probability of tumor recurrence. Traditional radiotherapy often only causes single-strand breaks in the DNA of tumor cells, but DNA has a double-strand structure and repair function. The powerful aspect of heavy ion medical devices is that they cause double-strand breaks in the DNA of tumor cells, making it difficult for cancer cells to initiate repair. Heavy ion therapy undoubtedly brings good news to tumor patients, but this does not mean it is "invincible". The indications of heavy ion therapy cover most solid tumors, and they are in the early and middle stages. However, cancer is a systemic disease, and heavy ion therapy is a type of radiotherapy, essentially a link in the cancer treatment system. Surgery remains an important method for tumor treatment, but for patients with advanced cancer that has metastasized extensively throughout the body, the cost-effectiveness of heavy ion therapy is not high.
重离子治疗则利用其质量较大的物理学特性，经过同步加速器的转化加持，重离子束的速度达到了光速的70%。用高速束流“轰击”肿瘤病灶，在抵达病灶前释放能量较少，抵达病灶时，会瞬间形成名为“布拉格峰”的能量释放峰，实现对肿瘤的“定向爆破”，强力照射病灶区域，又不会“误伤”沿途正常细胞，从而实现疗效最大化。此外，重离子治疗在生物学上有着明显的优势——很大程度上降低肿瘤复发的机率。传统放疗往往只能造成肿瘤细胞DNA单链断裂，但是DNA是双链结构，并有修复功能。重离子医疗装置的厉害之处在于造成肿瘤细胞DNA双链断裂，癌细胞很难启动修复。重离子治疗，无疑给肿瘤患者带来了福音，但这并不意味着它“所向披靡”。重离子治疗的适应证涵盖了大部分实体肿瘤，而且是早中期，但癌症是一种全身性疾病，而重离子治疗是放疗的一种，本质上是癌症治疗体系中的一个环节。手术依旧是肿瘤治疗的重要方法，但全身广泛转移的晚期癌症患者，重离子治疗性价比不高。
